Arguments for choosing the VLTJ railway as an experimental distance for a hydrogen train:

  • The railway is of moderate size regarding distance length and performance requirements.
  • Attention and visibility of the project (approximately 20% of the railway’s passengers were tourists in 1999 – many of whom came from foreign countries).
  • Location in an “outlying area”, where possible running problems have no consequences for traffic as for a bigger area.
  • Availability of hydrogen from “Cheminova” plant located at the end of the line.
  • Regional background: big share of new and renewable energy technologies.
  • Local political support and engaged staff.

Feasibility study

A feasibility study, co-financed by municipalities, Ministry of Economy and LEADER + Programme, was started in 2005 in order to investigate the possibility of using hydrogen as fuel for a small regional train. See the final report from September 2006 below.

2nd International Hydrogen Train & Hydrail Conference

The 2nd International Hydrogen Train & Hydrail conference was held in Herning, Denmark, with more than 50 participants from all over the world, e.g. from USA, Russia, Great Britain, Spain, Germany and Holland. The conference opened opportunities for closer international cooperation for a real fuel cell driven train on VLTJ rails.
